Fear is a difficult topic. I lost one of my best friends trying to talk about it. Very much problematic male behavior comes from fear, or fear of fear.
In some ways men have more to fear than women — especially failure and shame. These are not such potent problems for women.
For us, what is to fear is pain. And women after some years of unavoidable interactions with pain pass through fear. A man may never pass through fear of shame. He may avoid it, or may be permanently wounded by it. Men often manage fear of shame with anger. If you stay on the offensive, nothing can get to you. With or without offensive protections, it never becomes ok for a man to be shamed.

Whether or not they have given birth, women develop the capacity to survive and accompany pain, emotion, and complexity in general. I have learned to survive and accompany anger. In fact I might say that despite all I have done in my life, this has been the biggest -and still not fully vanquished- challenge. As a dancer I know it is my fearlessness which sets men free. Some release their power into this experience within a few moments of sensing it. For me, it feels like dancing with something that is exploding with brilliance. Some respond by gripping me, forcing a dependence that I do not need.

These guys are still in the prowess phase. Outrage is a totally appropriate and necessary response to the violence and injustice of the world and the wounds of life. The question is what to do with this anger, and there are many answers. One answer is art.
Tango is often acknowledged as a sink or ground or vessel for pain and grief and loss. Art gives men permission to experience rage. I want to give this permission to my dance partners, because this is one profound source of creativity. My role is not to interpret him, but to set him free.
And it is my capacity to quite literally step into the unknown without the slightest hesitation which makes this possible. My deepest desire is the same as all my students and friends … those who have yet to start dancing and those who dance a lot.

July Prowess and the Princess I have days, and tilts of the head, when I think that tango is very healthy, for psychology, community, gender development, and relationships. I want you to know that you are not alone… … neither in your dreams for tango nor in your frustrations. I would recommend the Journey Intensive for women, to all women who want to live life from a place of freedom by acknowledging and connecting to their feminine self.
I was unhappy, unsatisfied, suffering from bulimia and nervous and anxious all the time. I lived my life according to the rules and still was very confused. I had problems with my kids, my marriage was dull and truthfully so was I - I felt no passion. After two years in psychotherapy nothing changed.
And I was drawn to the Journey. I underwent several private one-on-one sessions before and then decide to go to the Journey Intensive Seminar. At the Journey Intensive I was completely unaware of being a woman at that time — there was no me. With no self-confidence, I was like a lost kid. However, the seminar helped me to crack open my self-made stone prison opening me to the possibility of becoming whole once more.
As this opening continued, I peeled away more and more layers of the rules, beliefs and limitations I had imposed upon myself until my deeply buried womanhood was revealed.
I find being with other women means you can drop any pretence of trying to impress men. You are more open to sharing your deepest emotions, have full permission to express, to cry, to be sexy, in fact anything and everything is allowed in a safe, and loving environment.
The energy is stronger and clearer. In this allowing and accepting of my own vulnerability it gave me permission to stop pretending I am strong. To know that I CAN ask for help and support. And most importantly, I CAN be myself. Strong, vulnerable, feminine, passionate, furious… I can have all these faces, they are all mine, they are all welcome and they create my unique wholeness.
I strongly recommend the Journey Intensive to all women. In I was diagnosed with 'in-situ melanoma' and my world flipped upside down. Soon after this devastating news I read Brandon's book, 'The Journey. Over people were in attendance and the energy blew the roof off the building. I was absolutely terrified, committed and entranced as to what lay before me.
