No one postcard view tells the complete story--rather, the sense of place emerges image by image as the author pulls readers through the collection as an assembled view. Arranged chronologically, Arreola's postcards allow us to discover the changing perceptions of place in the borderlands of Sonora, Mexico.

A more robust framework could have enabled analysis of the broader meaning of postcards to tourism and especially to ideas of cultural and economic difference. Could this practice help reproduce notions of cultural and economic superiority? Postcards of the water supply and workforce of Matamoros offer a second example.

Ecocriticism as a disciplinary practice is about to complete its second decade, and yet it remains relatively narrow in its linguistic range and, by implication, in its theoretical adaptability to a truly planetary scope of inquiry. There have been a few examples of comparative ecocriticism, even though an environmentally- or geographicallybased form of criticism would seem, of necessity, to need contexts broad enough and comparative enough in order to be rooted in an ecological logic. Of course, it is understandable that a disciplinary practice that seeks to be rooted in place and in the local ecological conditions of literary and cultural production would be wary of jumping prematurely to models of analysis that are too easily translatable from one context to another and thereby risk losing its environmental orientation altogether.

Comparative Literature, for that matter, has been slow to adapt to the impacts of ecocriticism and postcolonialism despite its multilinguistic frame. So we have a plethora of ecocritical, postcolonial, and comparative studies but rarely anything that can be considered all three in one. It presents selected and highly polished essays that resulted from a conference held at the University of Essex in The logic that informs the fascinating essays in this collection is geopolitical, rather than strictly ecological let alone national.

That is, it understands but refuses to be beholden to the politics of territory or the historically and politically determined limitations of language.
